The Bell P-39 Airacobra was manufactured for only four short years, 1940-1944, but has an interesting and storied history. This American fighter was fated to be rejected by the US and Royal Air Forces, but was instead adopted by the Soviet Air Force. It had poor performance at high altitudes, but tremendous speed, which the Russians put to good use against the Axis. In fact, the P-39 had more single victories than any other American fighter model during WWII.
A number of structural innovations appeared in this aircraft. She had a tricyclic landing gear layout and a hinged cockpit door, rather than the conventional sliding canopy. Her speed was also incredible, topping out at over 390 mph. It’s no wonder the P-39 is still used as a racing aircraft today.
